The British, Japanese, and Italian defense firms have announced the launch of a joint venture to oversee the sixth-generation Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) fighter, headquartered in London with plans to operationalize by mid-2025. BAE Systems, Italy's Leonardo, and Japan's JAIEC will each hold an equal share in the new venture, which is expected to design and build a fighter that can operate alongside drones and be ready for service by 2035. The establishment of this firm in the UK aims to ensure "" with the UK government organization spearheading GCAP development. The joint venture will be responsible for the ongoing design and delivery of the combat aircraft, maintaining authority over its development until at least 2070. Leaders from BAE Systems, Leonardo, and JAIEC emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts among governments and companies to successfully bring this project to fruition. Additionally, the joint venture will remain open to other potential partners, including Saudi Arabia.
