Poland has announced a significant step in its military modernization by purchasing an undisclosed number of MQ-9B Sky Guardian drones, which will be integrated into a new military branch called the Drone Force, set to launch on January 1, 2025. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the deal during a signing ceremony, emphasizing that this move transitions the Drone Force from a mere concept to a functional component of the Polish Armed Forces. The investment of approximately $310 million aims to enhance Poland's defense capabilities, particularly in light of security concerns from Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. The Ministry of National Defence has previously leased MQ-9A Reaper drones, marking Poland as the first NATO nation on the eastern flank to utilize medium-altitude long-endurance drones. The new Sky Guardians will allow for a variety of operations, including reconnaissance and combat, supporting a strategy to fully integrate unmanned aerial vehicles across the military. The delivery of the MQ-9B drones is expected by early 2027, with features such as advanced radar and sensors that improve operational effectiveness and situational awareness on the battlefield.
